Transforming Trauma – Yoga for Mental Health & Wellness

Trauma, stress, and exposure to the suffering of others can impact our ability to feel safe, grounded, and present. It can leave an emotional and physical imprint on the mind, body, and spirit. This trauma-informed, healing-centered yoga and meditation practice, Transforming Trauma, provides a COURAGEOUS SPACE to work towards healing and wellness.

Each 60-minute class includes gentle physical movement, restorative yoga, meditation, space to share, and other mindfulness-based self-care practices. We will use these and other mindful self-care interventions to reset the nervous system, increase awareness of the breath, and focus on the mind-body connection. Together we will learn self-care practices to build resilience and support physical and emotional well-being. This class is a wonderful supplement to talk therapy. No yoga or meditation experience required.

The characteristics and effects of addiction can easily be described as separation. Addictive behaviors disconnect us from ourselves, our loved ones, our community, and so much more. Yoga for 12-Step Recovery (Y12SR) is a 12-step based discussion and yoga practice that is open to anyone and everyone dealing with their own addictive behavior or affected by the addictive behaviors of others.

This program addresses the physical, mental, and spiritual dis-ease of addiction. Informed by research in neuroscience and trauma healing, Y12SR “connects the dots” by combining the somatic approach of yoga and the cognitive approach of 12-step recovery model.

Y12SR is NOT a replacement for 12-step programs.

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) healthcare workers and students consistently experience the effects of racism and lack of representation in the medical field. Having access to proper wellness and resilience resources is incredibly important for everyone, especially for those who must hold other people’s lives in their hands daily. This trauma-informed series offers mindful self-care interventions to address fear, anger, and grief. Together we will explore mindfulness, meditation, and rest to support your physical and emotional well-being –  ultimately leaving you with tools to burnout, minimize the negative impacts of stress, and improve your personal and professional quality of life. This class is ideal for nurses, doctors, other healthcare professionals, and students as well. “Healers need healing too.”

I haven't had much opportunity to practice self-care since having a baby. Your BEGIN classes in the fall were a great way to reintroduce myself to exercise, feel a sense of community with the group, and truly do something good for me! Also, thank you for providing this class during the lunch hour. Taking classes before or after work is challenging for me, so having a chance to take class during my workday is extremely helpful. I am looking forward to the next series!

The staff participated in a mindfulness and meditation session this week. It's important to take time for ourselves to center our minds and bodies. Thank you PTA and Courageous Space Yoga for this much needed and relaxing session.

This class was so enriching. Although I enjoy yoga, I am a complete novice, and you were amazing with introducing everyone to the basics. You took your time and were very good at reading the skill level of all those who participated. I appreciated your encouraging tone and eagerness to make sure we felt comfortable, while also challenging us to reach outside of our comfort zones. Your language was the most impactful for me, because I was able to attend more to my body and my present state of awareness. It was a truly valued moment of peace that I needed throughout my workday.
